Graffiti and Street Art: the Balancing Act of Urban Art

Come and hear the third in our new series of lectures exploring controversial issues – Graffiti and Street Art: The Balancing Act of Urban Art – presented by  Dr Reuben Woods PhD.

Emerging from primarily illegal roots, graffiti and street art have evolved to
represent a diversity of approaches. Yet enduring perceptions and their very
public performance ensure they continue to court controversy. 
Christchurch’s post-earthquake environment has provided an apt
landscape for graffiti and street art to flourish, celebrated as transformative
additions to the damaged city. But this profile has also highlighted a number of
incidents that expose the complexities of urban art’s lineage and contemporary
state.

Dr Reuben Woods is an Christchurch-based art writer and curator, specialising in
urban art. His PhD thesis explored the performances of graffiti, street art and
independent public art in post-earthquake Christchurch. He is widely
published, and is also the creative director of Watch This Space.
